Palm Beach County School Board Chairman Chuck Shaw is recovering from a major operation and is expected to miss school board meetings for several weeks.

Shaw, 68, a veteran educator and a school board member since 2010, underwent surgery Monday and is recuperating in the intensive-care unit of an area hospital.

His operation was successful but he is expected to be hospitalized for another 2 ½ weeks, according to people knowledgeable the situation, and will likely spend weeks more recovering at home.

In his absence, Vice Chairman Frank Barbieri will lead the upcoming board meetings, including one set for today. The nominally 7-member board has been operating with just six members since board member Mike Murgio resigned in April after being indicted on a federal bribery charge.

Prior to his election to the school board, Shaw served as principal of five schools, including Okeeheelee Middle School, and as deputy mayor of Greenacres.

In a statement, the school district said that Shaw’s family requests that he receive no visitors or phone calls this week as he recovers in an intensive-care unit.

Here is the complete statement:

We are happy to report that Mr. Shaw’s surgery was a success yesterday. He is currently in ICU as was the plan.

His family requests there be no visitors or phone calls at this time as he will remain in ICU through the end of the week. Your warm thoughts and prayers are still in high need, so please keep those going.
