As a lifelong Seminole fan who spent my freshman year in Tallahassee only to became a Gator graduate and editor of The Independent Florida Alligator … I just gotta say this cracks me up. And thank goodness I graduated before we all had to move to Perry ; )
Full disclosure: Extra Credit reporter Andrew Marra – also a Gator.
From the Post’s Zach Dennis:
Before you go calling the college to find out whether you have to pay double the tuition, remember that this is an April Fool’s Day joke.
The University of Florida and Florida State University got into the April 1st spirit Friday with a Twitter campaign for the newly formed, UFFSU (or FSUUF if you will). A campaign launched by the announcement that the two universities will be combining into one.
“I have thought for a long time how important it would be for us to talk about combining the University of Florida with Florida State University,” State University System of Florida Chancellor Marshall Criser III said in a video announcing the merger. “Taking the research might that you have in these universities, bringing together excellent faculty, (and) most importantly, combining some of the best students that we have in our state. It really needs to be more about Florida versus the rest of the world rather than Gainesville versus Tallahassee.”
According to the UFFSU Twitter, the schools needed to find a central location between Gainesville and Tallahassee and settled on the city of Perry to be the hub of the new school. “(Perry) has good parking,” Florida State University president John Thrasher said. “There are only 7,000 people who live in Perry so it will be a great place for parking.”
(“I hope they all drive 4x4s,” says one of Perry’s officials. Apparently they have no intention of paving pasture. Another just right touch? Looks like some barbed wire enclosed prisons will be converted to dorms. )
The next course of action for the newly established institution? Deciding whether their athletic programs will do the “chomp-chop” or the “chop-chomp.”
